Self Building

A self-built property is a home that has been built from scratch and is tailored to the requirements of the person who has commissioned it. Normally, self-builders would be the end-user of the home they have built, rather than a developer who would be selling the property when it is finished.

A person can be a self-builder even if they are just managing the project from afar – you don’t need to be physically doing all the work e.g. digging out the foundations or putting the roof on. It will be an advantage if you are in the construction industry as you will already be aware of the different stages and processes, however you will still be able to build your own home even if you are a novice – it will just take you a little longer to get your head around it. The majority of self-builders are hands on in some way which could be during the design process, choosing the trade companies and / or making decisions on the finishing touches. There are clear stages to follow when building a property, and the great advantage with tradespeople is that they all tend to know each other and can help guide you by informing you when they are expected to be on site.

Self-building truly is open to everyone. Whether you are a first-time buyer, a family looking to upsize or indeed a couple looking to downsize. There are different options for different circumstances such as self-build mortgages, bank loans or re-mortgaging.
